Live on Newsbreak and Move.PH: Mindanao Young Women Leaders

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A congress of young women leaders that the Mindanao Commission on Women (MCW) has organized will be livestreamed both on Newsbreak (www.newsbreak.ph) and Move.PH (www.facebook.com/move.PH). The congress, titled “Vibrant Visions, Valiant Voices,” will be held in Davao City from October 20-22, 2011.

At least a hundred of Mindanao’s most dynamic young women leaders will gather together and discuss how they will “explore, envision, and engage” to achieve their goals for peace and development in Mindanao.

Patricia Evangelista, a writer/producer for Move.PH and Newsbreak and the executive producer of ANC’s Storyline, will be the keynote speaker. Ms. Evangelista is also a columnist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Move.PH, a partner of Newsbreak, is organizing multimedia and citizen journalism workshops around the country on the main theme of social media for social change.

“The live streaming of the opening ceremony on October 20 (Thursday) will be an opportunity for the public to listen to the views of Mindanao’s young women leaders,” said Irene M. Santiago, MCW CEO. Also to be streamed live will be the session on “The Beginnings of a Change Maker: Conversations with Exemplary Young Women Leaders” where resource persons will be sharing their innovations, strategies, and other personal stories. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.

Other speakers during the opening ceremonies are Ms. Santiago and Ms. Margie Moran Floirendo, MCW Chair. Mr. Andrew Egan, counsellor of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) will share a solidarity message.

The three-day conference will tackle a wide-range of topics: Understanding Mindanao History, Feminism, Violence against Women and Children (VAWC) and Human Trafficking, Reproductive Health and Responsible Sexuality, Climate Change and Disaster Preparedness, Entrepreneurship, Drug Addiction, Creative Expressions as Tools for Advocacy, How to Run an Effective Advocacy Campaign, among others. Venue will be at the Garden Oases Resort and Convention Center, Barrio Obrero, Davao City.

Mindanao peace and development agenda from a women’s perspective. Its strategic areas of concern are peace and multiculturalism, poverty reduction, and politics and governance. MCW’s grassroots base is the Mothers for Peace Movement. Participants of this Congress will form the core group of the Mindanao Youth for Peace Movement that will implement the action program decided at the Congress.
